Which thickness?
- 4mm and 5mm: picture frames, cabinet doors, small window panes and replacement glass in older homes.
- 6mm: the all-rounder for shelves inside cabinets, door inserts and most window panes.
- 8mm and 10mm: larger shelves, table tops and splashback-sized panels.
- 12mm to 19mm: frameless shower screens, balustrades and large structural panels.
Replacing a broken window pane
Measure the old glass if you still have it, or the opening inside the frame, and take 2 to 3mm off each side so the new pane fits. Tell us the thickness of the old glass. Any glass in a door, beside a door, in a bathroom or below 500mm from the floor must be safety glass: see toughened glass.
Polished or raw edges?
Raw cut edges are sharp and only suit glass that will sit fully inside a frame. Anywhere an edge can be touched, choose polished.
Toughened or not?
Toughened glass is several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces. Choose it for doors, sidelights, bathrooms, shower screens, table tops, shelves people reach across and any glass below 500mm from the floor. Ordinary annealed glass is fine for picture frames and for small panes held in a frame up high. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled afterwards, so it is made to your finished size.
Clear or low iron?
Clear glass has a slight green tint that shows on the edges and through thick panels. For splashbacks, display cabinets, white joinery and anything 10mm or thicker, low iron glass looks whiter and truer to colour.

Questions
What thickness do I need?
4mm for frames and small panes, 5–6mm for windows and cabinet doors, 8mm for small shelves and coffee tables, 10mm for shower panels and table tops, 12mm and up for large tops and frameless panels.
Should it be toughened?
If the glass goes in a door, shower, low window, balustrade or anywhere people could fall against it, it must be safety glass under AS 1288. In those places, tap Toughened.
Can you cut a round piece?
Yes, up to 12mm thick. Choose Round and enter the diameter.
How thick should a window pane be?
Most older timber windows take 3mm to 4mm glass and most aluminium windows take 4mm to 6mm. Measure the old glass if you can, or tell us the frame type and we will help.
Can I get clear glass cut to an exact size?
Yes. Enter the width and length in millimetres on any clear glass product and the price shows straight away. Rectangles and squares can be ordered online in every thickness, and circles from 4mm to 12mm.
Can you drill holes or cut notches?
Not through the online calculator. Email us a drawing with the hole sizes and positions before ordering and we will price it.
