Choosing a mirror in Perth

More details and price examples

4mm, 5mm or 6mm?

4mm is fine for small mirrors fixed to a wall or into a frame. For anything over about a metre, or a mirror glued straight onto a wall, 5mm or 6mm stays flatter and gives a truer reflection. Gyms, dance studios and wardrobe doors usually use 6mm.

Silver, grey or bronze?

Silver is the standard, true-colour mirror. Grey and bronze are tinted: they soften the reflection and suit feature walls, bars and darker interiors.

Mirrors that need to be toughened

Ordinary mirror cannot be toughened. So mirror is not the right choice where safety glass is required, such as a splashback behind a cooktop. For a kitchen splashback, choose painted or clear low iron toughened glass.

Measuring

Measure the space in three places across and three places down and use the smallest figure. Take a few millimetres off so the mirror is not wedged against tiles or a frame.

Polished or bevelled edges?

A polished edge is smooth, safe to touch and looks clean on a frameless mirror. A bevelled edge is a sloped border ground around the whole mirror that catches the light, the classic look for bathroom vanities and hallways. Bevelling is available on silver mirror rectangles. Raw cut edges are only for a mirror that sits fully inside a frame.

Round mirrors

Every silver mirror can be cut as a circle: choose Round and enter the diameter. Round mirrors are popular above vanities and in entries, from about 500mm for a powder room to 900mm or more over a double basin.

Hanging a frameless mirror

  • Mirror adhesive on a flat, sound wall, with clips or a ledge to hold the weight while it sets. Use adhesive made for mirrors; ordinary glues can attack the silver backing.
  • Mirror clips or channels screwed into studs or wall plugs, top and bottom.
  • Large or full-height mirrors on a wardrobe door or gym wall should sit on a bottom channel. Two people are needed to lift anything over about 20kg.

Gyms, studios and wardrobe doors

For a gym or dance studio wall, 6mm silver mirror gives the flattest reflection over a large area. Where a mirror is at floor level or could be hit, fix it firmly to a solid wall with mirror adhesive and keep it clear of door swings.

Questions

4mm or 6mm mirror?

4mm for most wall and wardrobe mirrors, 6mm for large and full-height mirrors, gyms and anywhere it should feel solid.

What is a bevelled edge?

A sloped edge ground and polished around the whole mirror. It catches the light and looks finished without a frame. Available on silver mirror rectangles.

Can a mirror be used as a splashback?

Not behind a cooktop. Mirror cannot be toughened, so for a splashback choose painted or clear low iron toughened glass.

Can a mirror be cut to an odd shape?

Rectangles and circles can be ordered online. For arches, notches or holes, email us a drawing before ordering and we will price it.

Is a mirror heavy?

Glass weighs about 2.5kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness, so a 6mm mirror 1000 × 2000mm weighs about 30kg. Use mirror adhesive and clips rated for the weight.

Can I order a round mirror?

Yes. Choose Round on any silver mirror and enter the diameter in millimetres. The price shows straight away.

What thickness is best for a bathroom mirror?

4mm suits most vanity mirrors up to about a metre. For larger mirrors, or one glued straight onto the wall, 5mm or 6mm stays flatter and gives a truer reflection.

Do you deliver mirrors across Perth?

Yes, to every suburb on our delivery list. The delivery charge is shown in the cart before you pay, and there is none on orders of $500 or more.
