How laminated glass works
Laminated glass is two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. If it breaks, the pieces stay stuck to the interlayer and the panel stays in its frame. A 6.38mm sheet, for example, is two 3mm sheets with a 0.38mm interlayer. It is a safety glass, and it also cuts most UV light and some noise.
Laminated or toughened?
- Laminated cracks but stays in place. Use it where the glass must stay in the opening after a break: overhead glass, balustrades, shopfronts, windows at height and doors where security matters. It can be cut to size from stock sheets.
- Toughened is stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces that fall out. Use it for showers, table tops, doors and anywhere strength matters more than staying in place.
Clear, white or grey
- Clear for windows, doors and skylights.
- White translucent for bathroom windows, privacy screens and office partitions. It lets light through but you cannot see through it.
- Grey to cut glare on west-facing windows and skylights.
Which thickness?
6.38mm suits most house windows and doors. 8.38mm and 10.38mm are used for larger panes, shopfronts and some balustrades. 12.38mm is for big panels and heavier-duty jobs. For balustrades and overhead glass, follow your builder's or engineer's specification.
Replacing a laminated window
Measure the glass size inside the frame, not the opening you can see, and check the existing thickness at the edge. A small mark in one corner often says the thickness and type, such as "6.38 LAM".
Common laminated glass jobs
- Replacement house windows: 6.38mm clear, cut to the size inside the frame.
- Bathroom and toilet windows: 6.38mm white translucent for privacy.
- Skylights and roof glazing: laminated is used overhead because it stays in place if it breaks; follow the skylight maker's specification.
- Shopfronts and security doors: 10.38mm or 12.38mm clear.
- Glass splashbacks and furniture where a broken pane should stay in one piece.
Edges
Laminated glass going into a window frame is usually supplied with cut edges, because the edges are hidden in the frame. Choose polished edges for any exposed edge, such as a shelf, a table top or a frameless panel.

Questions
Laminated or toughened?
Both are safety glass. Toughened is stronger; laminated stays in the frame when it breaks, which matters for overhead glass, balustrades and security. Laminated glass can be cut after it is made; toughened cannot.
What does 6.38mm mean?
Two 3mm sheets of glass plus a 0.38mm interlayer.
Is laminated glass safety glass?
Yes. Laminated glass made to AS/NZS 2208 is a Grade A safety glass, because it holds together when it breaks.
What does 6.38 mean?
It is the total thickness: two 3mm sheets of glass plus a 0.38mm interlayer. 10.38 is two 5mm sheets plus 0.38mm.
Can laminated glass be cut?
Yes. Standard laminated glass (6.38mm, 10.38mm and so on) is cut to size from stock sheets. Toughened laminated glass cannot be cut after it is made.
Does laminated glass reduce noise?
A little, compared with single glass of the same thickness. Thicker laminated glass, such as 10.38mm or 12.38mm, makes a bigger difference than 6.38mm.
Does laminated glass block UV?
Yes. The interlayer blocks most UV light, which helps reduce fading of floors and furniture.
